Gloucester, Massachusetts

Yesterday (Tuesday, June 10) was a gloomy and cold day. We woke up to temperatures inside of 55 degrees F. Luckily, we can run the generator and heat the boat quickly, but the heat also dissipates fairly radidly even with all the hatches and dorades as well as the companionway closed. I had on layers but I felt cold most of the day. I went to bed with a hot water bottle.

I was never on deck, although Shalako and Peter ventured out a couple times for tasks. It was foggy and gray most of the day--when it wasn't raining in the afternoon. Even though Ten Pound Island is less than a mile away from where we are moored, we couldn't see it. We busied ourselves with various jobs, Shalako and I read (Peter works almost non-stop.), and we played a couple rounds of Take5 for a break from the tedium.

Sunlight was streaming through the windows and hatches when I awoke this morning, and the wavelets are glistening across the harbor. The outside temperature is 10 degrees warmer than yesterday (70 degrees!), and we can wear t-shirts. As Shalako said, it's like March in the Central Valley.

Peter and Shalako are priming the outboard motor and lowering the dinghy into the water for the first time in over two years. Our fingers are crossed that the engine works! We are going to town to explore. This evening, we are invited to Rick and Deb's house for dinner. We plan to leave here tomorrow and actually sail, not motorsail, to our next destination.
