Vinalhaven, Maine

Sunshine appeared for brief moments of time today, but the weather was mostly gray, making the temperature in the high 60's seem colder. Peter took the dinghy to a dock to get gas for the dinghy engine and offload trash and recycling. While in town, he couldn't resist going to a marine supply store. Who could? (Me!)

Around 2 p.m., we pulled up anchor to return to the coastal islands. The seas were calm as we headed east. The wind picked up to 10-12 knots as we left Rockland Harbor, but it soon returned to 6 knots. We enjoyed slow sailing at an average of 3 knots; it is very, very quiet at that speed. A brief increase in wind allowed us to speed up to 4.5 knots, and we began to hear the gurgling of the water at the stern of the boat. But at 3 knots, we seemed to drifting effortlessly and silently, hardly causing a ripple. We passed the rocks and trees and one small town on New Haven Island in slow motion.

With the engine on, we zigzagged past lobster pot floats and through passages among islands in Seal Bay, which are scattered throughout the water like green and brown gems. After four and a half hours of peaceful voyaging, we anchored south of Penobscot Island and west of Hay Island. The wind is light, the sun has set, and the only sound is the occasional cheep of birds and the soft tapping in the rigging.
