Bumpkin Island, Hull Bay, Massachusetts

Although in the last post I stated that we were headed to Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod and then back across the bay to a sheltered anchorage, our plans changed as the wind did. By 10 a.m., the wind had increased to 15 knots from the southwest, and we deployed the spinnaker, sailing northwest on a port tack close reach. We were flying across the water at 9 to 9.5 knots! By 2:30 p.m. the wind was up to 22-24 knots, and we took down the spinnaker, set the genoa and put two reefs in the mainsail. Still we cruised along at 9 knots. After 8 hours of great sailing, we reached the waters of Boston and at 4:30 p.m. tucked in to Hull Bay just north of Bumpkin Island for the night .

Mike and Peter enjoying a great day of sailing

Since I had not prepared sandwiches before we departed Onset Bay because our plan was to hop up to Plymouth, we had only had snacks all day. Quickly I made grilled cheese (and turkey for the carnivores) sandwiches and steamed carrots, which we devoured just as quickly. Later we had more snacks before an early bedtime. It would have been nice to explore the island by paddling in on the kayak, but Peter was still not feeling well, so we passed the time on board.

This morning, after Peter replaces belts in the engine room, we will head in to Boston to enjoy urban life and Fourth of July weekend festivities.
