More (or Less) News from Sandy Hook Bay

View from our anchorage

Yesterday, Peter and I awoke from a full night of peaceful sleep and we spent the day at anchor here in Sandy Hook Bay just north of Atlantic Highlands. We spent the day cleaning and sorting through stuff at the nav station and disgarding a lot of things that we had not found any need for in the last four years and did not anticipate ever needing in the future. I also did some other cleaning and Peter rerouted some running rigging. It was a slow and uneventful day. In the early evening we watched a sailing race on the bay. The fast boats had beautiful and very expensive headsails made of laminated carbon fiber, which can be designed and cut with a more accurate curve than traditional sail cloth, providing more lift and improving performance. When they tacked, the boats quickly deployed colorful spinnakers while hauling in the headsails as they skimmed across the water.

Later today we will cross the lower bay of New York Harbor to anchor near Coney Island. The next day, we may head up the Hudson River. Timing is everything here as it is essential to pay attention to the tide and current patterns.
