The End of the 41st George Town Cruising Regatta

Today was the final day of regatta event. At 9 a.m., the regulation volleyball event commenced. The team members were obviously people with experience and a competitive edge, although camaraderie among all the teams prevailed. It was great fun to watch people with high skill levels playing.

The closing ceremony was held at 1 p.m., and included another round of raffle prizes, closing remarks and recognition of the volunteer chairpersons, the conch horn blowing competition and a couple of musical performances. Peter participated in the men's division. Never one to give up, he pratically passed out from lack of oxygen and almost took out another player as he swayed, seeking balance and air.

Afterwards, we chatted with people on the beach for a while, I hung out with the southern stingrays and bonefish by the conch shell pile near the conch shack, and then we walked along the beach for a couple miles and explored paths to the interior of the island. Although the vegetation is mostly scrubby, there are lovely beach casuarina providing welcome shade and sea grape plants and palms providing contrast to the fine white sand and limestone rocks, the turquoise water and the deep blue sky. I picked up some lovely land snail shells.

Since Peter plans to devote himself to working on the boat while we are here for an extended period of time in Elizabeth Harbour, where the cruisers share advise and parts and are available to assist with jobs, I decided to offer tutoring services to the families with homeschooled kids here. Tomorrow morning, I am assessing the skill levels in various subjects of three siblings. They stopped by just to say "Hi!" this afternoon.
